Return to: Undergraduate Degrees
Biology is a science that considers the processes of life at the molecular, cellular, organismal, ecological and evolutionary levels. Biology majors learn fundamental concepts within each of these areas in a required year-long survey of biological principles. Subsequently, students select advanced classes based in the foundational areas of biology: Cell Biology, Genetics, Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology. To ensure depth in biology, students will select a minimum of three 300 level courses. To equip themselves for the lives that they will lead as biologists, students complete 12 credits of support work in the areas of chemistry, physics and/or mathematics. In addition to learning through coursework, students are required to complete an internship and a capstone that is either research or journal club based. All students complete Areas 1, 2, and 3 comprising the biology major core and complete one biology major track.

Teaching internship
Teaching internship replaces the requirement of BIOL 495 .
Students seeking a life science teaching license
Students seeking a life science teaching license should take at least one elective in each of these three areas:
Additionally
Students must also complete the requirements listed under secondary education and education core.
Secondary Education Licensure Core:
Secondary education licensure requires a content major in a certifiable teaching area and completion of the following eight components:
- Foundations of Collegiate Learning, Liberal Arts Core, and university graduation requirements
- The education core (See “The Education Core” section.)
- SEDU 310 Standards, Assessment and Instruction for Engaged Learning
- The secondary methods course(s) in your chosen discipline including the field experience (See below)
- TEAC 4XX Student Teaching in Secondary Disciplinary Area
Secondary Methods:
Students must take the methods course related to their major. In addition, if one desires to add another secondary teaching endorsement, the methods course for that endorsement must be taken. Some secondary methods courses are offered every other year. Check with your education advisor or the registrar’s office for more information.
The Education Core:
The education core, which is required of all students seeking a teaching license, is the nucleus of the teacher education program and includes basic courses in education and psychology. Elementary education majors, students seeking secondary licensure, and Post Baccalaureate students are required to take all EDCO courses for a letter grade and to earn a minimum grade of “C-” in each course.
* Prerequisite:
Students must complete a background check prior to beginning this field experience. The background check will be conducted by BVU’s Human Resource department and is at the student’s expense.
