CHEM 261 - Organic Chemistry I

First in a two-semester sequence introducing the chemistry of carbon compounds. Emphasis on structure, spectroscopic analysis, synthesis, reaction mechanisms, and properties. Laboratory emphasizes technique and synthesis. Three lectures and one three-hour laboratory period.

Prerequisite(s): CHEM 152 .

1.Draw organic structures, including resonance forms.2.Describe how organic acids and bases behave.3.Name, draw, and explain various conformations of alkanes.4.Explain the basics of an organic reaction and use these reactions to synthesize a desired molecule.5.Correctly draw and identify the structure of chiral molecules.
