Location(s): Storm Lake

Gender Studies (GNDR) at Buena Vista University is an interdisciplinary group and program that brings together faculty, staff, and students from across disciplines to explore issues related to gender, sexual orientation, race, class, sexuality, and ability, and to celebrate diversity in its many forms within the university, society, and the world. GNDR provides a space for those within the university to: 1) include and engage multiple voices while reflecting on one’s own views, 2) analyze ways in which gender, sexuality, ethnicity, class and intersectionality affect social and cultural experiences of individuals locally and globally, 3) critically examine structures of power and oppression from both historical and modern perspectives, and 4) mindfully participate in the Buena Vista University and Storm Lake communities.

The minor in Gender Studies (GNDR) offers students a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary study; it prepares them to be informed and engaged participants in their lives, professions, communities, and the world. The courses that comprise the program are drawn from disciplines across the university. These courses highlight and explore theories, perspectives, and issues central to women, LGBTQ, and many other marginalized groups. The minor provides students with an opportunity to prepare for a wide range of careers (health, law, business, government, teaching, and many other fields), continued professional training, and a full life.

For those interested,

GNDR also offers but does not require: GNDR 489 GNDR 490  and GNDR 499 Independent Study .

In addition,

students will select 12 credit hours of GNDR/GSTR (Gender Studies Track) designated courses from at least 2 different disciplines. Contact the coordinator of Gender Studies or Registrar for the current list of approved GNDR courses or check the course schedule for the current semester. Depending upon the course, it may simultaneously fulfill a requirement for a major, general education, and the GNDR minor.

18-19 credit hours
