Conditions of Admission


As Approved by the Board of Trustees:

Recognition and Accreditation

Buena Vista University is a non-profit educational organization which is currently exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Buena Vista University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (since 1927), 30 N. LaSalle St., Suite 2400, Chicago, IL, 60602, 312.263-0456, hlcommission.org. Our next comprehensive evaluation is in the spring of 2031. Special accreditations for specific undergraduate programs include Education: Iowa Department of Education; Social Work: Council on Social Work Education (CWSE). At the graduate level, the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is specially accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). 

Buena Vista University holds membership in the Iowa College Foundation; Iowa Association of Independent Colleges & Universities; Association of Governing Boards (AGB); Association of American Colleges & Universities; Council for Independent Colleges; Association of Presbyterian Colleges & Universities; and the National Collegiate Athletic Association American Rivers Conference.

Official Communication

The official means of communication at Buena Vista University is e-mail to individual BVU accounts. Students are expected to check their BVU e-mail regularly to receive important information concerning their courses as well as other university communications. E-mails sent to students at their official BVU e-mail address will be considered delivered and read. Failure to remain current on official e-mail does not excuse students from knowing the information contained in communications sent to their BVU e-mail address.
