ESSI 510 - Advanced Special Education Law and Professional Practices 3 Credit(s)
This course emphasizes educators’ and school leadership professionals’ awareness of the sources of unique services, networks, and organizations for individuals with disabilities from the context of special education law. Knowledge of IDEA and the special education process is a primary focus. Professional practices related to family dynamics, parent rights, advocacy, multicultural issues, and communication are additional key topics. Practice in implementing and communicating aspects of the individualized education program (IEP) and legal understandings are central to this course.
Prerequisite(s): MAT student must have passed Teacher Education Program Checkpoint I.
Grading Method: Letter grade.
Learning Outcomes: 1. Describe federal and state legal systems. 2.Describe the major provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Family Education and Privacy Act, the No Child left Behind Act of 2001, and other federal and state laws affecting the education of students with disabilities.3.Identify and explain the major principles of the IDEA.4.Identify and explain the major litigation leading to the passage of the IDEA.5.Critically discuss and evaluate legal trends in special education.6.Identify and explain the major principles of the NCLB.7.Develop legally sound policies and procedures with respect to special education in accordance with the legislation and litigation.8.Locate sources of information regarding legislation and litigation in special education9.Write a scholarly paper analyzing an aspect of special education law.10.. Analyze the results of litigation using the case briefing form.11.Discuss and evaluate the major court rulings on the IDEA.
