ESSI 503 - Characteristics of Learners with Significant Behavioral Disabilities 3 Credit(s)
In this course, special educators will explore key concepts and issues related to the characteristics of learners with learning and behavioral significant support needs. A focus is placed on understanding the characteristics, development, and learning needs of this unique population within the context of learning environments.
Prerequisite(s): MAT student must have passed Teacher Education Program Checkpoint I.
Grading Method: Letter grade.
Learning Outcomes: 1.there are multiple approaches to viewing disabilities as categorical, characteristics-based, or both2.special educators understand how and when to use labels vs. characteristics of the learner3.while litigation and legislation have prescribed certain expectations within the field of special education, a divide still exists relate to interpretation of policies and determination of appropriate identification and services4.special educators must be able to take perspectives, formulate their own philosophies, and demonstrate a readiness to address conflicting views in a professional manner5.Students with disabilities must be recognized as unique individuals6.Labels may define a disability, but they do not define the student.7.It is imperative that teachers recognize the cognitive, academic, social, and behavioral characteristics of learners with exceptional needs in order to effectively plan for those needs.8.Characteristics of students with disabilities can overlap several disability labels.9.by using a characteristics approach in instruction, special educators can effectively address learning needs and increase student self-determination at an appropriate level.10.student-center approaches focus on increasing self-determination and increased indepdence
