ESSI 502 - Characteristics of Learners with Significant Cognitive Disabilities 3 Credit(s)
In this course, special educators will explore key concepts and issues related to the characteristics of learners with significant support needs. A focus is placed on understanding the characteristics, development, and learning needs of this unique population within the context of learning environments.
Prerequisite(s): MAT student must have passed Teacher Education Program Checkpoint I.
Grading Method: Letter grade.
Learning Outcomes: 1.Consider and explain the historical views and practices related to understanding and working with people with significant support needs.2.Describe and explain a variety of disabilities that require greater levels of support.3.Compare and Contrast a variety of disabilities including lifespan considerations and quality of life.4.Explore and carefully consider issues faced by persons with significant support needs and their families5.Consider issues related to meaningful community inclusion, including the concepts of self determination and informed consent.6.Discuss ethical issues around working with persons with significant support needs.7.Explore federal policies affecting persons with significant support needs.8.Relate the range and extent of services typically available across the lifespan.
