ESSI 101 - Introduction to Exceptional Learners

This course is an introduction to key concepts and issues related to the characteristics of learners with a variety of exceptionalities. It includes a brief overview of special education history, policy, and practices, and presents a comprehensive overview of high and low prevalence disabilities within the context of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement act and other associated policies/practices. This includes the general developmental, academic, social, career and functional characteristics of individuals with mild and moderate disabilities as the characteristics relate to levels of instructional support required, and the psychological and social-emotional characteristics of individuals with mild and moderate disabilities. An overview of current trends in educational programming is provided, to include educational alternatives and related services, and the importance of the multidisciplinary team in providing more appropriate educational programming. Exceptionalities related to students who are at-risk, English language learners, or talented and gifted are also presented.
