COMM 100 - Fundamentals of Communication 3 Credit(s)
This course is a study and application of basic elements and processes essential to effective oral communication. With an emphasis placed upon practical speaking experiences that are relevant to individuals and groups, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the foundations of human communication, such as the self and communication, the listening process, verbal and nonverbal messages, interpersonal communication, public speaking, and group presentation dynamics.
General Education - Foundations of Collegiate Learning. Course Frequency: F, S
Notes: Must earn a grade of “C-” or better. Grading Method: Student option.
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify the components of the communication process and the types of communication in which humans engage (interpersonal, group, and public speaking);
- Demonstrate active and critical listening skills;
- Develop perception and self-monitoring skills to enhance self-awareness and communication competency;
- Deliver effective oral presentations;
- Recognize how gender, ethnic, and cultural factors influence the dynamics of communication; and
- Recognize the ethical responsibilities of communicators in a democratic society.
